newsy

pve design newsy holiday wrap idea

Nothing like some hot news to give me something to "rap" about or visual display to inspire something newsy to my life.

It's a wrap at J.Crew - New York city window, photo from a design affair
Spotted this window while in New York City and thought it was newsworthy.  The J.Crew windows that were literally wrapped in newsprint.   I wonder if the visual display team scratched another idea in lieu of this thrifty idea given the current news.

all that is fit to print and to wrap in the window of J.Crew, New York

Love to know what you will use for your holiday wrap?  Oh, sorry, I know it is not even Halloween.  Can you blame a girl for planning ahead?  Soon this will be old news and something hot off the press will be here, which by the way reminds me of my own pressing, ironing that is.  My mother has always told me, "things have a way of pressing out."

I use old maps. They're pretty, interesting, free and add to the whole, "reduce, reuse, recycle" concept!

elena,
old maps, you are a genius, and then that avoids the newsprint smudginess everywhere....we have an old box of maps.

i love it!! i usually only wrap in craft paper, and occassionally (for small boxes) wrap in a tiny polkadot. I like for all the gifts to be tied with the same ribbon- last year I used a 'spruce' and 'citron' raffia!

Wrapping gifts is like therapy for me. Having a "budget" year, I may default to last year's look for the holidays: kraft brown wrap with white, red and green ribbons.

Other years I have opted for single bold holiday colors with contrast ribbons.

Though I think I'll add pinecones from my yard this year...

For months, I have been awaiting the Container Store's Gift Wrap Wonderland, which happens at the end of this month. Seriously I can't even think about it without jumping up and down!

Last year I used craft paper and sometimes paper bags tied with red and white string....not sure what to do this year!

I like brown craft paper with expensive ribbon too.

In Atlanta our J Crew window is blanketed in news print also. Whether it was random or intentional, many of the headlines are related to big serious issues, so i thought it might be a nod to all the college students who are currently more involved in politics ?? Something about fashion juxtaposed with real world happenings?

I love your illustration using the newspaper! What a lovely holiday card this would make!!

The best part of the the gift for me is the wrapping! I can't stand still when I see all the new papers that come out!!

A friend and I were talking just last night about how we used newspaper, comics and kraft paper...

I too love Container Store paper (so much one store offered me a job!) My other favorite place is Paper Source!

A few years ago I saved up the sunday comics for a year and used that as my giftwrap -it was fun! Now I just use a red and white stiped paper (like candycanes) that I got at hallmark - so not high designey at all! I use ribbon that I get by the yard at papersource though - I love their ribbons!

Those are darling illustrations at the top!
I've used comics before. I read somewhere lately to buy rolls of wallpaper on sale and use it for wrapping. I haven't tried that yet, but like that idea. :)

Love that window! My husband's family always wrap gifts in comics - birthday, christmas - all of them. I always buy paper at crane or papyrus the week after christmas to use the next year. It's been so long, I can't remember what I bought and what our choices will be. My mother likes to use gold and silver paper for christmas and embellish with ribbon.

So funny.. I just saw the J.Crew display yesterday and LOVED it. I have ink my blood as my family is in he newspaper business so I was especially keen on the display. I also saw some birch logs & rolled newspapers in a basket type bucket at Anthro that would look really cool on a fireplace... love the post!

hmmm that's a lot of thinking ahead---(love the newsprint window!) i try not to give gifts I have to wrap but when i send out bonbons, I usually just cut a strip of pretty paper and run it around the middle with a pretty old ribbon or raffia...we make little tags from brown paper bags--cuts down waste and is pretty (albeit a bit more work for us!)

Okay, old maps is such a good idea! Bravo elena :)

I use brown kraft paper and twine!

I'm not sure what I'll use but I love these ideas. I'll be thrifty this year. Maybe the comics?

Love it, love it, love it! I'm already thinking about holiday wrap - hoping to do something to reduce the mounds of expensive paper that we use. Last year I used brown butcher paper and tied it up with various colors of embroidery thread. I think newspaper could look very classy as well.

I don't have a very creative idea here - I use pretty giftwrap. I tend to pick a color scheme and then use that on all my gifts so they match. I'd love to use old maps but I never have any of those laying around. I tend to trash anything Im not using.

I bought TONS (almost literally, I believe) of vintage glass balls this summer at yard sales and flea markets so I have a feeling they'll work their ways onto gift packages.

Last year a I bought a great roll of paper at Ikea with little elves on it that looked like garden gnomes. I'm hoping to go a bit greener this year (maps is a GREAT idea) but I couldn't resist the gnome goodness.

I love love love this idea. It's clever and clean.

For wrapping this year, I will be prudently using up last year's remainders of Xmas paper. And maybe a few comics pages—an old trick I learned from my father, who did it during WWII. I will not be using gift bags, as wrapping is far too much fun.

it's been a while, Patricia. I've been MIA in the blog world, but I'm back and catching up on all my fav's!

I had to comment here, I do the visuals once a month a JCrew. Used to work their full time in college, now just once every month. I missed last month, this window display. My co-visual worker had to do it all by herself, and it was a daunting one! Looks cool though:)

Hope all is well!

Hickey Freedman also had the wrapped newspaper look--I noticed a week after photographing JCrew. Glad you were inspired to do that cute illustration!
