busy signal

When was the last time you made a call and got a busy signal?  I remember growing up and my Mother or Father simply taking the phone "off the hook" so dinner time was uninterrupted.  The cord was wrapped around the door knob.  In this busy life, you might just want to try unplugging and spend some quality time.  Are you reachable 24/ 7 or do you have hours off the hook?

I am horrible with telephones! I usually never hear my cell phone ring and then it takes me a while to check my phone and get back to people (those that know me well, know my technology flaws!) I wish people did that every day, sometimes we need to spend more time off the hook and being "unavailable" not only for our own sanity, but everyone around us!

Clare,
I am glad I am not the only technically challenged. I hate answering my phone in public spaces. It just feels rude to me.

ahh, you bring back such memories, patricia. We were just talking yesterday with my mom who reminded me that my son saw her rotary dial phone and said, "Nana, WHAT is that?"

Patricia,
You have reminded me that I need to detach. I am too attached to my i-phone. It was routine when Kenny was ill. I no longer need to be available 24/7. I will work on this.

I don't like to answer my phone when I'm with a friend/family. It seems rude to me to think the person on the phone would be more important then the one in front of me. On the other hand there has been moments when I have had to answer due to work or emergencies. I remember how easy it was in those days to disconnect. Ahhh... the good ole days. xo

I wish I could take the phone off the hook. I am so rattled when I hear it ring. Love email so much better.

And am loathe to talk on my cell phone in public. Talking in my car while I sit in carpool line seems to be my best "phone time"! :)

I hate talking on the phone and don't own a cell phone since I work from home. Even if I'm in the kitchen and the phone rings I don't answer, I'm bad about phones.

Every time I try the doctors office I usually get a busy signal for the first hour they are open. I really don't answer the phone in the evening after my hubby is home. Family time is so limited and precious!

I have to admit I NEVER answer my home phone. And it's funny how little I actually talk on my cell...It's really just for texting and emails. I do wish people could learn to put down their cell phones more... and certainly at the table!!!

Hi Patricia! So funny you should pose this question today. We're snowed in, definitely no question of getting to work and I'm trying to decide just how much to connect. In some ways it's good that I'll be able to keep up and keep things moving, but in other ways I wish I could lose my iPhone, stay off the net work, and just be in this beautiful white world! (And I'm with you and Clare, don't like talking on the phone in public!)

Well put! Actually, used to take off the phone while our children were growing up too. Today, they are off to their own independent lives but sometimes, with calls of work and marketing, the phone is still detached for an hour or so. Internet is just ignored at times too.
When we had a problem with internet provider last week, I did accomplish more reading and writing!:)

I have no problem ignoring a ringing phone or being w/o one.

Do you remember party lines?....

I loved thinking about this because when you called my house growing up, there was ALWAYS a busy signal. With two girls close in age and a mother who could talk on the phone for HOURS, we frustrated many a people with the busy signal! When call waiting or second phone lines became available, my parents wanted nothing to do with it. So we just kept frustrating people with that annoying "beep, beep, beep." I hadn't stopped to think that you never hear that sound anymore.

Happy Sunday!

There are quite a few occasions when I don't want to be interrupted and take the phone off the hook at home. I don't even carry a cell most of the time, unless I'm traveling.

I miss the days without Caller ID (I resisted that for years) and Call Waiting. I think that the latter function has contributed to the demise of the busy signal. Noone's ever busy; they just put you on hold. . . .

Missing the mystery of telephone calls . . .
