bookish bee

Summer is a busy time and I always start off the Summer with the best intentions to read more. I envision myself as a book worm or a bookish bee and then life takes hold with such a fervor that all my list of reads buzzes around me until I finally settle down to read. Just like a bee to a flower. I was drawn to this graphic cover.

One book that I just finished reading is a contemporary novel "Little Bee" by Chris Cleave and I shall never quite look at my passport the same, nor my name. Have you read "Little Bee?" Part of me wants to believe that novels like this are purely fictional, although cruelty like this exists in our world however friendships and empathy can make life changing goals in regards to one's human rights.

Between the raw flashbacks throughout the story and little boy Charlie running about in his batman costume, my emotions were caught at full attention. This is a read that will make you stand a bit taller and want to do something better, at least it affected me in this way.
What are you reading now? "Little Bee" would be a great read for a book group to share. Do you read contemporary novels or just classics?

I haven't read this, but will add it to my "plan to read" book list, which keeps getting longer and longer. I too, haven't read as much as I planned this summer.
I hate to admit it, but your previous recommendation, THE RECESSONISTAS, is still on my list, waiting to be read. Thanks for the recommendation.

Susan,
I think when we have a "plan of attack" it helps to achieve our goals. Happy Reading to you and enjoy the remainder of Summer reading time.
Good Luck!

Its wintertime here for another week and a half but I only read fiction when im indulging in a book. I suppose I really like to lose myself in another time and place. Thanks for visiting me and for your lovely comments, :)

I read "Little Bee" earlier this summer and had the same reaction as you. It stirred so many thoughts and emotions. Now I am reading "Cutting for Stone" and loving it!

Thanks for the reco - I just downloaded it so I can read it when I am finished with the Dragon Tattoo/Fire/Hornets' Nest series...which I can't put down!

You have peaked me curiosity now Patricia. The cover alone brought me in and the story now sounds like one I have to add to my collection. I am reading Espresso Tales by Alexander McCall Smith as part of the 44 Scotland series written about life in Edinburgh, Scotland. Next on my list, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo...just to stir things up a bit :)

I have every intention of reading more...but alas I have not picked up a good read in awhile. Maybe need to change that...off to do yardwork.

Hi Patricia,
Welcome back! I have the book - but alas, I haven't gotten around to reading it yet. I will put it on the top of my reading pile. I'm working my way through the light The Summer We Read Gatsby...and then on to Cutting for Stone. I love to read it all!

I haven't read Little Bee, but I am tempted to read the reviews though I don't want to be swayed.

Currently, I'm rereading the Power of a Praying Wife by Stormie Omartian. Gotta help keep the Mister empowered and covered.

Hope you had a lovely weekend! Come visit me sometime ;-)

i was mesmerized by little bee - ready in bed at night; I could not put it down, which is remarkable because I usually fall asleep within a page or two at night. i loved how the story kept changing - I could not guess at all about where the story was going next and my like/dislike of the characters kept changing. we just dropped off miss is! quiet and a little sad.
