woodsy weekend

I had to select the stain for our wood floors and one would think that would be simple.
So many choices.
First I had a cup of black coffee.
I curled up and texted my dear sister seeking her good council.
She reminded me that light does not show the dirt.
Considering that my walls are not dark, they are moonlight white, I knew I could go dark.
I wanted dark all along.
They are working right now and I will be back with a photo of the finished floors this week.
Today, there is a nice crispness in the air, perhaps a fire is order, now to gather the wood.
What color wood do you like?

I love the look of dark stained floors. When I had to make the choice so many people told me NOT to do it because it shows EVERYTHING. I went with the mid range/slightly darker and I think it was the right choice.

I'm sure whatever you do it will look great

Dark they are....
Oh, darn, I am gonna be a slave to my dark floors.
At least I will be busy and out of trouble.
My dog is white....help!

I've had both and my preference is dark wood. In my opinion, it is more dramatic and interesting...I don't notice that it looks any dirtier, but maybe that is because I have a dog with black hair and I notice that on my light carpets! Besides it's easy to care for wood floors, even in my kitchen -- just vacuum and swiffer is usually all it needs, and an occasional steam cleaning. I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice!

I love the dark floors and I would be a slave to them also! Can't wait to see the finished photo! Oh, no the white dog will be a project, our dog is reddish/blonde and we're living in a house with Tera-cotta tile running through out it and I will say his hair is pretty camouflaged. I'm sure you will love your floors you wouldn't get that contemporary vibe without those dark foors.

Diane,
Thanks for your blessing on the dark floors.
I love them.
My 12 year old daughter hates them.
Life is like that.

Patricia I would go dark, I did with the last home I put hardwood in and loved them.

Yes a bit more work, totally worth it though!

I like the dark color for your floor. I'm sure it will take a bit of extra work to keep clean, but that is what we do for things we love. :) xo

Carrie-
I am so happy to know that I can count on other blogger buddies and artisans to share their thoughts and opinions. Dark they are and I am loving them....just not the smell for now, but soon that shall dissipate.
Hope you are doing well.

I love the look of dark or even black floors, but I would have to own stock in Swiffer if I had dark floors. I love the finish of our floors and they look clean even on a summer day with kids running through the house straight from the beach. Can't wait to hear what you decide.

I had pre-finished dark stained wood floors installed in my previous home 8 years ago,,2 weeks in, swore i would never have them again. I found them challenging to clean, swiffering left streak marks, many cleaners leave visible residue, my cat left long scratches on a daily basis down to the raw wood colour. Took me a while to find a good wood floor cleaner, and discovered that a 100% cotton mop head/pad is essential (absorbs and leaves no streaks). Keep a stock of stain touchup on hand, I used a gel stain, wipe on, let dry then wipe off excess with acetone. They do look beautiful but you have to be dedicated to them - which I know you will be! How exciting for you to have reached this stage in the reno, I'm sure they look gorgeous and can't wait to see!! ~ C

I can't wait to see your dark floors. An element of sleek to a rustic medium is very intriguing to me, but I am never brave enough to venture to saturated beauty. I love it from afar! I am always drawn to something like the raw and faded beauty of the ceiling and beams in the last photo.

I love old, dark & worn wood floors. There's something so soft and forgiving about them and when they ache a little bit from life, I give them a good Old English rub.

Dark floor always look great! I've never thought about cleaning them though, but I am the woman who put in ivory carpet with a new puppy and young child!

Your new dark floors are going to be beautiful and worth the extra Swiffering! Our floors are a medium golden brown, no stain needed as they are Cumaru (Brazillian Teak) and the color was perfect as is. I vacuum them mostly with our little Miele, it's fast, but Swiffering is pretty fast too.
You'll love staring at them while cleaning, which makes it all more fun!

I can relate, we just went through our wood stain selections this week. So far so good! We went with a rich chestnut/walnut-y brown. I will show it on Thursdays house update post. I really love it, it has no red which I did not want and so far so good. Good luck in your decision making, love your inspiration!

I love either really dark floors or bleached out light ones. Sounds like yours will be beautiful w/the walls.

Hi! Just stumbled across your blog and for some insane reason this is the first time I've actually visited, while I have heard about your blog via other blogs for quite some time! Honestly, wHen it comes to floors, our house had old OLD narrow yellowed oak floors. They were Ugly with a capital U. And they always felt and looked dirty to me. We recently refinished and went with a custom walnut-with-a-touch-of-ebony stain. They turned out exacty what we wanted and, while they may show dust more than lighter floors...they somehow feel CLEANER. On my own jobs I always do one of the extremes...very light or very dark. But dark is my fave :)
