first home

If you are like me, there is something nostalgic about first homes. This illustration was part of a give-away and the winner wanted an illustration for a family member of their first home. I am living in my first home and my parents are living in the first home they built.

Are you living in your first home? Does your first home need a little honor and dedication?
Why not celebrate your number one home!
Does your home need a gift?
What would you give your first home?

  1. We just moved out of our first home in April, it is only about a mile away. I still can't drive by, it makes me cry. There were so many firsts in that house. Especially this time of year, my daughter's "climbing tree" a 40ft japanese maple that turns a beautiful shade of red...this will be the first year without it. Do you think they would mind if I just popped by with my camera for our yearly family portrait by the tree??? I do love my second house too:) --Gretchen O.

  4. Gretchen,
I love the idea of having your family portrait by the tree of your first home....and that it brings you to tears, well that is just too sweet!

  5. This is the first house that I have bought to live in full time. I purchased a beach house when I was flush, but sadly had to part with it when I was bust.
Being a New Yorker I rented for most of my life. Renters do consider their apartments homes too, and I clearly remember my first home in a New York apartment.

  6. I'm in No. 4! And, I have had a little love affair with each one. 1905 brownstone (San Fran), high rise apartment overlooking Broadway (nyc), Red brick spacious colonial (Charlotte) and little white house that you have so beautifully captured.

I just keep loving on this little house....and soon there will be more of it to love!

  7. How beautiful. I am in my 7th home and I still love my first. I drive by it whenever I'm in that town. So wonderful and strange at the same time!

  8. I'm in home #2. My childhood home is now owned by my teenage baby sitter. I was visiting a few years ago and thought I saw her out on the driveway. I waved hello - but it turned out to be her teenage daughter! She waved me over and told me her Mom had told her all about me and our family. Event hough she was home alone she gave me a tour because she "knew" me. I love small towns!

I think one can attach themselves to homes be they renters, home-owners or even the homeless in NY.
I remember seeing the same habitants in staked out "prime" real estate and thinking how they had landed in the best spot.
I hope to come see your home one day, I feel as though I know it intimately.
Having a cup of coffee in your kitchen and talking shop. Now that would be a first to celebrate!

  11. We just sold our first home, well, the first home we built together. I am thinking I am going to have you make me a beautiful image to add to my gallery wall in our next home. It holds so many memories for us, mostly bringing our two sons home here. I know it is going to be hard and there will be lots of tears shed, but new memories will be made!! xo

  12. Patricia, I have had many homes. I think a painting of one's home is a most special gift!

  16. My first home was one my husband and I had designed by an architect and built just for us. We lived there many, many years and I loved that house. My dauaghter grew up in that house. However, life is a long road and I am now a single woman. When I bought the house I live in now I named it in honor of my first house, which was on "Buttermilk Road," so I still keep a part of that house with me. That said, I love the "cottage" I live in now best of all!

  17. Yes, i'm living in the first home i've owned, but it's a condo. Even though it's a beautiful building it still doesnt' feel like it's 'mine' and doesn't have the same emotional attachment as a real house. I do have your beautiful drawing of my blog banner hanging in my entry way though :-)

  18. We live in our second house. It was supposed to be a wait/see house to wait and see how my husband liked his job. Twenty-four years later, we are still here. I have turned over every square inch of soil on my lot with a shovel, maybe a pick-axe. Gardeners tend to take root longer than other house owners a friend once told me. Got that right.

  19. We had a condo first, then moved into our current home. It will be 12 yrs next month. Not only does it hold wonderful memories, I like to think of it as our private own treehouse.
    Have a golden weekend! xo

  20. How funny you ask about first homes. I just did a post on the first home I remember, mostly for my kid's benefit, but still may be of interest elsewhere. I think I'm on #9 if you don't count some part timers. I'm trying to document them all. I love the one I'm in.

  21. I thought I would be in my first real home forever (we had been in apt's and rentals before), but like poor Mrs. Blandings, it didn't work out that way. I live right next door which is good and bad. Luckily a very nice family lives there now so I know it is tended to well.

  22. I think my husband and I have a few "first" homes...the first one we lived in (before being married), our first as newlyweds, our first (and still living there) home in the Hamptons and our first home (and still living there) in Westchester. They all hold such warm, fond memories. I get sentimental when I think of the ones we don't live in anymore. Love this piece of artwork...truly priceless. I have a client who had a painting of their house done by an artist in the south.

  23. we are in our first home and i love it...when we were house hunting we saw so many undesirable places - we had a very small budget...but the one we bought sung to me ... we did not get it the first time around...but a few months later it was back on the market and here we are almost 20 years later!
