civility

Monday morning - back to civilities of life. When I am painting, I strive for a certain civility in my work. There must be a certain politeness, a modicum of respect and an air of gentility. There is something nice about finding that in my work that sets me straight with purpose. My work brings a polite start to my day, along with a fresh cup of morning coffee in my blue and white porcelain mug.

What sort of civility or manner makes your day more well-behaved?

  1. I find that sitting in the garden flicking through a glossy mag with a steaming hot cup of tea gives me 5 minutes of pure heaven, especially if the sun is beating down on me.

I love that you take time for you, to find a few minutes bliss in the midst of housewifery!

  3. I find that using one's china, even if only for a quick snack, always imbues a sense of civility. I've never understood those who have beautiful china yet rarely use it.

  4. What adds civility to my day and work... keep coffee away from any painting or illustration.......
I love the feeling when returning from the gym that I have been good to myself and am all set to go!

I do have a rare cup, that I like to use, especially with a small bit of chocolate for a a decadent day.

    Debra,
There was an artist who liked to have the "ring" of coffee mugs in the work, I will have to check to see, I think I spotted it at the Moma a few years ago.

  6. I count on my coffee and my quiet time before my house wakes. In fact I will get up really early just to have it. I like to pet my dog and think, dream. I love that you find tranquillity in your art!

  11. That first cup of coffee is a MUST. It is enjoyed most in a black mug that is branded with the M bar of my father-in-law's ranch. (I have found it to keep the coffee the hottest the longest).

And, it's a real plus if after I drop the boys at school, I get to head to yoga. Today is not one of those days.

  20. I was raised in a European fashion and my mother always set the breakfast table with her beautiful tea cups (for coffee), china and linens.
I find it very comforting to do that now...although most of the time I'm usually in front of the PC in the am, but my coffee is in a very pretty, antique, blue & white extra large tea cup.
Classical music, old jazz and french music also bring the civility into my day...

    Lovely post!

  21. Making my coffee: freshly ground beans, pure water, placed into my Technivorm coffee maker. You (I) have to be present in every step or disaster lurks (the worst was when I put the grinder cup in upside down coating/killing my coffee grinder!). It is a morning meditation that is poured into one three last remaining mugs I gave my parents over 45 years ago. The mugs have come back to be now filled with many coffee moments I shared with my parents. My morning coffee fills my new day with a connection across time and space and makes me content.
