good eye

"Nobleman" -Inherited eyes that spy on me
Part of being dedicated to art and to create one's own unique vision requires that of a "good eye."  Think of those that have gone before and imagine what they saw, I cannot help but go about my day and be reminded of the importance of a good eye.  The above confrere gives me the eye each day.  He provides a constant "nudge" to my day.  Often, I think I hear him say, "Carry-on, Stop procrastinating and just do it."  I call him my "Nobleman."
"Lady Bountiful" eyes me every day
It is all tempered by "Lady bountiful", full of concern, a bit red in the cheek and telling me to take a break and go easy.   She looks a bit weery and lacking at the same time so she is that gentle push to make me want to lollygag or book an appointment for some sort of treatment, perhaps a facial.
Eyes of my daughter, watching me, painted by my sister
Then there are these sweet young things that were painted by my sister.  These eyes belong to my youngest child and they have that look of "ready to go"- excited to see and take it all in.  At the same time, they also have that look of "me do it" and the pride of showing her very own mother what she just saw with her little eye.  We have played countless games of eye spy with my little eye, the apple of my eye.
"The apple of my eye"
What do you think it makes to create a good eye?  Are you born with it, is it innate or is it through seeing that we develop a good eye.  Tell me, do you have a good eye and what is eye-catching to you now?

I think one may be inclined to have a good eye, but exposure and experience is key, at least in my case. My appreciation and love of the arts have been developed over the years, esp. in part by my former boss. She loves the arts. My inspiration hasn't hit me yet this morning! Although, yesterday was Mozart's birthday - that's always a good way to start the week!

Emily-
Exposure and experience are key, but like Mozart - that is pure prodigious vision.

I think my eye has morphed with time...not sure it's getting better, just maturing differently(like a fine wine, I guess ;-).

I think old architecture is what is most eye-catching to me right now. Mostly because of landing in a 100 year-old house...I think that's a perfect example of how life has dictated what's eye-catching to me these days.

My eye is just the lens for my brain, which is sometimes a conduit for all kinds of things that creep in from the universe.

Great post. Some are born with a good eye and an innate style and talent and for some I think it's a learned thing over time and experience. And for some it will just never be.

I think some of us are born with an innately "good eye", but only some of us are presented with the opportunities to develop that sense and skill. I think I have a good eye, but lack some of the training that would truly make me a visual artist. These days I'm drawn to natural elements. Tree branches against a dawn sky, birds sitting on a tree, the color of the sky, the line of the horizon. I love that.

Inspired. I was just discussing eyes this morning with my mother. A good eye is innate- sharpened by study, life- god bless the child that's got it. I am drawn to portraits- and before I knew it most of my art collection was portraits- Thank you for sharing.

Beautiful, thought provoking post. Gorgeous painting of your daughter!! I don't really know if "a good eye" is innate or trained; I think probably a combination.

Wow, your sister paints too? What an amazing gift she gave you with a painting of your sweet youngest.

Lately I've had an eye for color and cheerful touches in my home. Must be a spring thing.

I think a "good eye" is something one is born with. But it must be developed and honed by exposure to beauty in all its forms.

I love those blue eyes of your little one!!

I think we all have "the eye" but some haven't discovered it-yet.

Hi Patricia

I have been busy with work this week and just catching up...the eyes watch over you look pensive...loved the idea that you were able to meet a blogger! And the "eye"? I do not have it, my Mom does but I think I hvae learned frmo her example...but I think to be truly original, you are born with it (like Terry said!)
Have a great week! Tara

A very smart post. Love the eyes. All of them, especially your daughter's.

Must be fate, I was thinking about "my eye" today, and the conversation we had about it. And here this is. Oh my. I'm going to have to think about it a bit more.
