Autumn in New York

"Autumn in New York" has always been on of my favorite songs composed by Vernon Duke, and sung by many greats, Sarah Vaughan, Frank Sinatra and others.  Picture this lovely gal, an Author in New York coming home after walking her dog and doing a bit of shopping.  She has just picked up a new scarf in scrumptious shades of fall. Upon arriving at home, she plans to warm up with a bowl of piping hot butternut squash soup and glass of  White Reisling Wine and continue on her latest writing project.  All this of course after perusing the latest Bergdorf's Fall Catalogue.   The leaves are swirling about, the wind is starting to pick up, dusk is swiftly approaching.
What is your favorite part about Autumn in New York or where you live?

  3. I was going to say that feeling of crisp. Walking out the door and having it great you - like the very best wake up call and what a way to get your day going! I miss that feeling.

...in Houston it's been nice and cool in the mornings, but come afternoon, I am met with hot, sticky, and humid!

  4. Pumpkin Spice Lattes from Starbucks! And the cooler mornings... that's about all we have now {as far as cooler temps go} and I'll take what I can get!

  5. We enjoy a 20 minute drive south of Anchorage: snow capped mountain scenery along the Cook Inlet and ending up at the charming Turnagain House in Indian to enjoy a crackling fire, delicious meal and view

Oh, but you always have a "cool" hip vibe to your posts
in spite of the heat of TX.

  8. The best part of Autumn in NY for me is the fashions. I just love it when the sweaters come out and to see how NY dresses up. Fabulous.

  9. Fall is my favorite time of year! I love the colors, the smells, the traditions. I love going outside in the morning and the air is crisp and clean.

I grew up in the Northeast, so the fall foliage was always so spectacular. When I lived in Texas, I really missed the trees changing colors! I was so happy when I moved to Atlanta, because the trees do change colors.

  11. I love the crispness to the air as well. It's not too cold, but cold enough to need a sweater. I'm love getting to wear all my boots. Now that i'm in my own home I love that I have a fireplace. I just want to come home from work and curl up on the couch with hot chocolate.

P.S. I adore your illustrations. They are so beautiful and each one tells a great story. kudos to you!

  13. That song is one of my favorites, too, Patricia! It's not ever very Fall-ish here in FL, but it is nice knowing that a beautiful Winter is ahead and I did manage to find cider and some caramel apples here. Hope you Fall is wonderful!

  16. You've created such a beautiful scene! I want to step into her world, right now :)

I think of the beginning few shots from the movie you've got mail. "Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies!"

I love the fact that I can bury myself in my bed covers at night!

  17. Bringing out the fall/winter wardrobe, of course!

Your illustration and post reminds me of that scene in "When Harry Met Sally" with Ms. Ryan and Mr. Crystal walking through the leaves in Central Park (?) When I think of New York, it is almost always Autumn or Christmas.

actually the jacket is a vintage barbour - and I love the new ones which are more fitted and a bit sexier.
love vintage finds and glad you hung onto your old barn jacket.

  22. My favorite part would be the way traffic slows and the air smells much fresher, and the city appears cleaner.

EVERYthing is my favorite thing about autumn in NY. Or anywhere! London has a pretty superb autumn, too.

  24. This sketch just makes me happy.

I just did a post on tis topic this week! Including this quote:

"Don't you love New York in the fall? It makes me want to buy school supplies. I would send you bouquets of sharpened pencils, if I knew your name and address." -Tom Hanks in You've Got Mail

  25. New York is my favorite part of Autumn in New York!!!
What a wonderful picture you paint, complete with soundtrack...

    Autumn in New York
Why does it seem so inviting
    Autumn in New York
It spells the thrill of first-nighting

    Glittering crowds and shimmering clouds
    In canyons of steel
    They're making me feel - I'm home

    It's Autumn in New York
That brings the promise of new love
    Autumn in new york
    Is often mingled with pain

    Dreamers with empty hands
    They sigh for exotic lands

    It's Autumn in New York
Its good to live it again

    Autumn in New York
    The gleaming rooftops at sundown
    Oh, Autumn in New York
It lifts you up when you run down

Yes, jaded rous and gay divorcees
    Who lunch at the Ritz
Will tell you that it's divine

    This Autumn in New york
    Transforms the slums into Mayfair
    Oh, Autumn in New York
You'll need no castles in Spain

Yes, lovers that bless the dark
On the benches in Central Park
    Greet Autumn in New york
It's good to live it again

    Autumn in new york
That brings the promise of new love

  26. I love autumn in New York...I wish it lasted longer! This weekend I spent a leisurely day walking through the West Village and Brooklyn with a cup of coffee in my hand and a jacket on for the first time this season. And I loved every minute of it (while my laundry sat in a pile at home. ;-)

  32. I love everything about fall! There is nothing like a beautiful fall day in New England, nothing beats it (no offense) Apple picking, a crisp night, that warm fire smell, apple pie, pumpkins, mums, so much!!

I love that picture too, so beautiful!

  33. First of all, wonderful illustration! Autumn in New York is wonderful, though I do not have the pleasure to live there… I specially love the change of colors and cool days in The City! We really don't get that in Houston, just as Courtney shared. Here half of spring, summer and part of fall all seem to melt into an eternal hot and humid season. Though it is true, mornings are beginning to be cooler, if only it would stay like that the entire day…
