You all know that Halloween these days does require some sort of etiquette or rules for your little trick-or-treaters. Do you stand watch, tell them "not that house" or "no" to that street. The above illustration was created for Sheridan Road Magazine. It is inevitable that word gets out about the "best" candy or "best neighborhood" for treats. What sort of protocol do you instill or at least try to enforce for your trick-or-treaters to follow?

All our neighborhood children are wonderfully behaved. Their parents wait on the sidewalk and they all say thank you.
Most importantly, my attitude toward non-neighborhood children coming to our home has changed dramatically. I used to be mean-spirited and resented their being there. What was wrong with me?? Now I'm thrilled to see them arrive. I know they will get lots of "treats" and are in a safe environment. If only all children were blessed to live in this "world."
Sally,
Yes, I welcome and greet each child and want to know what they are if I cannot readily decipher said costume.
I remember those days of being "hobos" and being so delighted to have any treat.

As for protocol.....if the front door/front porch light is not on, you don't ring the doorbell....you move along to the next house.
My children are grown so I haven't gone out "treat or treating" in years. I'm sure the protocol is still the same the porch light needs to be on.
