point of view

view from left
When a request comes to me to illustrate a home, these are the sort of shots that I like to work from. Starting at the left, capture an image of the home. Notice how the trees in this image lead your eye directly to the home.
center view
This one was taken standing straight in front. Straight-on!

view from the right
Then stand to the right. One can see what sorts of things might block or add interest to the overall image. Go back to the top image and the property seems flat, right?
Funny how all three images can show different points of view.

As an artist, it is hard to work from one image, I usually need at least 3 points of view to gather and collect details to add to the finished artwork.
Tell me - which one of the above photos would make the best work of art?
We all have unique view points.
I will then come back later this week to share the final art.

  1. Carole -
Thanks, I plan to tally the votes. They are all really good shots, just different points of view to ponder.

  3. I love hearing the approach to the artistic process! Great timing, as I was pondering the newly built facade of my new home - which is being framed, but they added the exterior plywood yesterday so now it is starting to look like a house. I looked at it from the construction driveway, and from the site of the new driveway, and thought it was interesting how it changes appearance. It is also on a somewhat 'conceal and reveal' type of a lot - on the curve of the street, and the house sits atop a crest - so you don't even really see the house until you are almost past the lot. It is one of the many reasons why we liked the lot so much!

  4. I'm drawn to the bottom image. It shows parts of the house you wouldn't otherwise see - the open windows in the sun room for example. The photo also gives this home a setting - a very lovely one at that.

Also, even though the tree at the front obscures the house a little - I like this as it gives a little intrigue.

Always fascinating to read about the creative process.

  5. I like the last one because it shows the fabulous sunroom AND the porch on the left side. Which are probably parts of the house that are used often...then again That is just my "point of view!" Have missed ya...been crazy around here.

  6. I like the center, straight on, view. There's just something so honest about it. Anyway you look at it, it's a gorgeous house. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished artwork.

  7. I like the top view where you can see a bit more of the greenery, but they're all great!

  10. Oh....I love seeing your process! I like the first and second photos. But, I often see you approach things from an angle, so I'm guessing you selected the first photo - from the left.

    Can't wait to see! xoxo

  11. that's a hard one, I like the one from the left makes the house seem elegant...but the view from the right makes it appear "homey"...

I have always wanted to take a drawing class on perspective, thanks for the reminder.

  12. I like the middle one - straight on.

the "non-skilled drawer" in me loves the straight lines.

Wouldn't the family look so sweet sitting on the steps?

  17. I like the view from the right. So interesting. I cannot wait to see the final product now.

Do you do commissions? I have an old home and would love an original piece of its likeness!

  18. This is such a great lesson. It is amazing how different the views appear. I am most attracked too the view from the right.

  20. I love the straight on view, but like the trees from the left, AND the view from the right (of the far left of the house). You're right, it's nice to see all views, but how will you decide?!

  21. Good morning,
My choice is #3. The first two only hint at the rooms on either side.
Looking forward to see your post
    with the completed painting.
