A tree grows....

My heart goes out to all the trees and the treetops in California and the fireman working tirelessly to stop this fire. My mind wanders to this classic...

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, A Novel by Betty Smith, Harper & Brothers, Est. 1817
Please take a moment today, look up, give thanks for the treetops around you, above you and send strength to the firefighters as they fight these fires safely.
May these heros find strength, dignity and honor.

  1. Those are some brave men who are fighting all those horrible fires.
Nature always rises from the ashes. Forest fires give way to new growth.

  7. Frau,
Hope you are having a nice day there and you are right, Mother nature can do such damage - but with love and hope, we all work to re-build, plant and begin anew.

  12. We're on the same wavelength Patricia- I just did a 'tree' post today {but in relation to fall}, even our pics are close. I feel for all those families, the firefighters AND those poor trees.

  15. I say a hearty amen to all. As I commented on Lisa's blog, every region seems to have its own fury. Here in the midwest, tornadoes. And, of course, we know the devastation of hurricanes. I think fire is the only one with any form of redemption. As Mel said, fires give way to new growth. Its nature's way of renewal. And nature is as wonderful as it is often cruelly efficient. The firefighters are heroes. Our hearts go out to the people of California.

  17. Thank you, Patricia. We're a good thirty miles from the fires on either side of us, but it's still awful to see and smell and we even have ash this far away. Firefighter friends are involved and it's on the news around the clock. And the worst thing?... it's not even "fire season" yet so we're likely in for more of the same.
(btw... A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is one of my top favorites from childhood and a new copy is on my bookshelf right now waiting to be reread)

  20. PVE,

This is something very dear to my heart, for my father was a fire chief for 35 years. It is such a dangerous and courageous job. He has always been my hero in more ways than one, but there is nothing like the feeling of seeing him come home after a long shift of fires and giving him a very big hug because again, he survived the blazes.

These men are such heroes and possess such selfless hearts.

My heart not only aches for them and their families and the trees, but also the scared wildlife that are being forced from their habitats.

Hoping it is contained very quickly.

    ~Melissa

  21. What a sweet post. The fires are truly devastating here.

Also, that is still one of my all time favorite books.

  22. What a thoughtful post, Patricia. With all the modernity in our world today, it is still true that firefighters die fighting those blazes. (Lots of county firefighters in my life -now, but especially while growing up, family and friends, so it's a tender spot in my heart. Two of my step-nephews are down south working the fires you're writing about).

Firefighters - and their families - wives, husbands, children... I am so thankful for their sacrifice.
